Designed with Patients In Mind

The fruits of more than five years of planning, budgeting and construction has finally been realized with the opening of the Texas Tech Physicians Medical Pavilion, adjacent to the TTUHSC at 4th Street and Indiana Avenue!

At the center of the building's design are the patients and their families.

The Pavilion brings together clinics that previously were in the TTUHSC and in the Medical Office Plaza, adjacent to University Medical Center, giving patients easier access to their doctors' offices. Expectant mothers now have reserved parking spaces. Patients' can be dropped-off directly in front of the building entrance and a patient shuttle is available to bring patients and their families to the building from the parking lot.

The building's interior design is contemporary, utilizing sage green, mauve, and gold. Lobbies are open, highlighted by floor to ceiling windows. The art glass project, hand crafted in Germany, incorporates loosely painted fields of blues and reds alongside a contrasting, hard edged, ladder-like structure depicting the DNA molecule and its protein rings. A glass sculpture drops from the second floor ceiling into the loft-like entrance lobby creating a repetition of the DNA molecule in the front window.

Artwork has been incorporated and is a pivotal part of the building's personality. Along the north face of the building, a floating glass design will encompass window panes from top to bottom. Several studies have been performed assessing color and its impact and influence in the healing environment. The artist of "DNA" Shan-Shan Sheng was contracted using the money the Board of Regents approved in 1998. They allowed that one percent of the total cost of each new construction project exceeding $500,000 is devoted to art.

Outside landscaping includes native plants requiring little water. Patients and their families may also enjoy an outside meditation courtyard.
