Through chattering teeth TTUHSC administrators cut the ribbon on the new Texas Tech Physicians International Pain Center during a chilly outdoor ceremony on November 11.
The facility is 12,700 square feet and includes nine exam rooms, two operating rooms and two procedure rooms. The center is the first surgical facility TTUHSC has licensed with the state of Texas
Gabor Racz, M.D., professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Anesthesiology, has been instrumental in accomplishing the International Pain Center's prominent reputation. Racz was the first chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology in 1977.
For years, Racz and his colleagues, Mark Boswell, M.D., Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management and director of the International Pain Center, Miles Day, M.D. Pain Fellowship director and chief medical officer of the Surgical Center for Pain Management, Robert Johnston, M.D., Rafael Justiz, M.D., and Ralph nussbaum, D.O., have been involved in developing innovative technologies, devices and procedures to treat pain in patients from all over the world, said School of Medicine Dean Steven Berk, M.D.
Boswell said he is proud of the new state-of-the-art facility and he is confident the center's physicians and staff will continue to fulfill the center's promise to help patients effectively manage their pain.
"The people who work here every day make this happen on a daily basis for our patients," Boswell said. "We're the International Pain Center and we're happy to be here."
Construction for the center was made possible in part by a generous contribution by the Messer Family made in honor of the Gene and Carlene Messer, longtime Lubbock residents and supporters of Texas Tech.
