The long, cold winter months are on us and with that comes the dry, cool wind. Unfortunately, this wreaks havoc on our skin with dry, scaly, itchy results.

West Texas is at a distinct disadvantage in fighting dry skin as the humidity in our area is so low. The good news is that there are numerous measures you can take to maintain soft, supple, smooth skin throughout the summer.

"The number one culprit involved in drying out the skin is showering habits."

While the long, hot, soapy showers feel good, they are actually stripping much needed moisture from the skin. "I advise my patients to take lukewarm, short showers and only use soap in the areas where it is truly needed, such as the armpits and groin areas. The type of soap used is also important. It should be gentle, indicated for sensitive skin, fragrance free, and not of the antibacterial type. Examples include Dove, Cetaphil, Cerave, and Purpose soap bars," says Texas Tech Physicians Dermatology doctor.

Tips

  • Loofahs, body scrubs, and toners should be avoided.

  • Immediately after showering, pat dry rather than rub dry and apply a heavy creamy moisturizer. The heavier the moisturizer is, the more effective.

  • Humidifiers can also be added to the room to bring additional moisture into the air.

These measures should aid in managing dry skin. If the problem persists, see your dermatologist for additional treatment recommendations. Texas Tech Physicians Dermatology can be reached at 743-1842 or 800-782-7310.
