ANNUAL STORK'S NEST BABY SHOWER

BACK FOR SIXTH YEAR

The Sixth Annual Stork's Nest Baby Shower, hosted by students at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's School of Nursing, will take place at 1 p.m., April 3 at the International Cultural Center, 601 Indiana Ave.

The public is invited to attend the event, which will feature numerous raffle and auction items, including sports items signed by Texas Tech coaches.

Prior to the event, Health Sciences Center nursing students will be in the community seeking donations of new baby items, auction items or money to be used by the Stork's Nest, a program designed to increase the number of women receiving early and regular prenatal care. The Stork's Nest provides incentives to help pregnant women make and keep prenatal care appointments, as well as teaches expectant parents about healthy prenatal and infant care practices.

"This project is very important to the women who visit the Stork's Nest, many of whom are teenagers, as well as the nursing students who have a chance to see the importance of community health needs and have the opportunity to give back to their community," said Linda Brice, R.N., Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Nursing.

The Lubbock Chapter of the Stork's Nest serves a vital community role in increasing the number of Lubbock women and teens who receive early and regular prenatal care so that more babies are able to start life healthy and hopefully not premature.

Brice said the students' goal this year is to raise $35,000 from the shower to purchase additional baby items. The Stork's Nest is a national cooperative project of the March of Dimes and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Donations of baby items or monetary donations are now being accepted.
