Nearly five million American couples experience infertility. Approximately one in six couples seeks medical help because they are having difficulty in conceiving. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of having unprotected intercourse (sex without contraception). Just over one million couples seek medical advice regarding infertility on a yearly basis. The average time it takes a couple to conceive is about six months, and around 70% of couples will have achieved a pregnancy by the end of a year of trying. Female infertility can also be divided into primary and secondary infertility. Primary infertility is when you have never conceived; secondary infertility is when you have got pregnant in the past, but have now been trying for at least a year without success. In order to maximize your chances of becoming pregnant, you first need to recognize that you have a problem and know when it is time to seek help. When should you see an infertility specialist?
