Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and it is found equally among men and women. In 2009, over 49,000 deaths occurred due to colorectal cancer. What is amazing is that most of these deaths could have been prevented if colorectal screening had been performed.
The risk for colorectal cancer increases with age. More than ninety percent of cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 50. Other risk factors include: a family history of colon cancer or polyps, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, a diet high in fat or red meat and not enough fruits and vegetables.
There are a variety of colorectal cancer screening tests that can detect cancer at an early stage. Call your doctor TODAY and ask if a screening test is right for you. For more information please visit www.texastechphysicians.com/lubbock or give your Texas Tech Physicians Surgery Clinic a call today at 806-743-2373.
If you have recently been screened for colorectal cancer, we congratulate you for taking steps toward staying healthy.
