In our increasingly-digital world, more and more doctors appointments are being conducted online, including specialists like dermatologists.

While virtual visits are a convenient change for patients who would otherwise have to travel and sit in a waiting room, some patients worry about whether or not they are making the right call. Understandably, people want to rest assured that they’re making the most of their time with their provider.

Texas Tech Physicians knows you always want to experience an appointment of the same quality when you meet through a computer or phone screen. Going over the details of a Texas Tech Physicians Dermatology visit, we will walk you through what makes a perfect virtual visit, and what questions are better asked in the exam room.

Online vs In-Person

There are many cases where a virtual visit is perfect for your dermatology appointment—using visual and audio technology might be all you need. By using telehealth, patients can attend basic and preventive dermatology visits without the inconvenience of leaving your house.

If the appointment is not for basic issues or a preventative, routine appointment, there is a good chance you can still be treated virtually.

Some issues that are commonly treated during an online appointment include acne vulgaris (acne), certain types of hair loss, atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis, fungal infections like tinea corporis (ringworm) and other rashes such as contact dermatitis.

Skin conditions that are widespread, severe, blistering, etc., or full body skin exams to detect skin cancer generally warrant an in-person office appointment.

What to Expect

All you need for your telehealth appointment is a stable internet connection and a working camera and microphone. Almost any smartphone, laptop or desktop computer can be utilized. You also need a private space, like a bedroom or a room with a door you can close and/or lock. Ideally you will have good lighting available, allowing your dermatologist to see any condition with clarity. This appointment should feel like a visit to our offices: conducted professionally and privately. Dimly lit areas, public areas and poor WiFi can severely hinder the process of diagnosis and treatment.

During this chat with your dermatologist, you can feel free to ask any questions and show your provider the areas that are causing you concern. The Texas Tech Physicians IT team has ensured that all our patients are completely safe and secure during these visits, so there is no need to worry about issues of confidentiality.

After Your Appointment

Once you close out of the application, your appointment will conclude. Your provider will give you any further instruction you might need to complete after your virtual appointment. Whether this includes a follow-up appointment or a new prescription, you will be able to go about doing those things the same way you would following an in-person appointment.

Do not hesitate to call your Texas Tech Physicians Dermatology clinic if you have any questions about virtual appointments, including how to book them. You can also go to our virtual visits page to find out more information and request an appointment.
