When I was in high school, I took a psychology class which ended up being the catalyst for my interest in mental illness/health. With life's twists and turns, it took me a while to get started in the field but once I started, I never looked back. My first job in the field was as a case manager working with kids in the juvenile justice system. Later, I became a licensed therapist and have been working in different areas of the mental health field for 19 years. In addition to working in the field, I also advocate for more/easier access to mental health services in schools. My husband is an artist and an art teacher. We've been married for 21 years. I'm not much of a gardener but I do love working outside in the yard. I also love interior design, my subscription to Psychology Today magazine, beautiful fall mornings and coffee.
Amber Ruiz, LPC
When I am not working, I am spending time with my family. I believe it is important and necessary to have a healthy work-life balance. Both my husband and I are mental health therapists and enjoy traveling, going for walks, or playing in the backyard with our son. My special interest is working with children and families. My desire is to help them build a stronger healthier foundation for their families. I have experience working with a wide range of individuals from littles to adults. and delivering food, and medicine through local community programs. I also actively
participated in lecture series to provide appropriate education about COVID-19 through
a professional organization called Bangladesh Medical Association of North America
(BMANA). I felt intensely the helplessness of people during COVID-19 era and also
the internalization of the devastating effects of COVID in our society, in the context
of stress, unemployment, and trauma during the time had a huge influence for the genesis
of interest in psychiatry.

Malathi Perugula, M.D.
I was born and raised in the southern part of India, and I graduated from MNR Medical
College. My passion for psychiatry sparked when I started working as a primary care
physician in India, where I realized the superstition and stigma regarding psychiatric
illnesses deeply rooted in my patients' communities. Over time, I've gained a diverse
spectrum of clinical and research exposure in the United States, propelling me toward
becoming a highly proficient psychiatrist. I am immensely grateful for the chance
to train within the Texas Tech Psychiatry residency Program at Permian Basin. I'm
sure this program would provide me with a supportive and collaborative environment,
invaluable mentorship, and a comprehensive approach to psychotherapy. I am particularly
interested in geriatric psychiatry and women's mental health and am committed to providing
the best possible care to my patients. My paramount focus is to balance my professional
endeavors and family life. I am fortunate to have a supportive network of loved ones
who enable me to do so. Beyond work, I relish spending quality time with my family,
indulging in the joys of cooking, and engaging in meaningful activities that forge
enduring memories. I am excited about the journey ahead and confident in my ability
to positively impact my patients' lives. With top-notch training and mentorship from
the faculty members, alongside my skills, determination, and commitment, this program
will sculpt me into a skilled psychiatrist.
Miriam Shayeb, M.D.
I was born and raised here in the Permian Basin, where I first became interested in
a career in medicine. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University in
Houston, TX, before returning to West Texas for my medical education at Texas Tech
University Health Sciences Center. In medical school, I developed an interest in psychiatry
and appreciated the specialty's unique consideration of patients' individual stories
and multimodal approaches to treatment. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue
my psychiatry residency training here at TTUHSC at the Permian Basin and to serve
the community that has been an integral part of my life. Within psychiatry, my clinical
and research interests include consultation-liaison psychiatry and women's mental
health. In my free time, I enjoy cooking for my friends and family, watching mystery
series, reading nonfiction, and traveling.
Muhammad Saad, M.D.
Greetings! I am a highly motivated psychiatry resident who received my medical degree from Dow Medical College in Pakistan. When I first traveled to the United States as a medical student, I was thrilled and inspired by the amazing quality of medical training and technologies in the US healthcare system which inspired me to pursue my career in the United States after graduation.
With a compassionate and inclusive approach, I aim to create a safe space for my patients to heal. I have a particular interest in cultural mental health and am committed to providing culturally sensitive care to all my patients.
In my free time, I love exploring the outdoors, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and enjoying music and movies. With my exceptional training and passion for psychiatry, I am excited to contribute meaningfully to the field.
Nadeem Mian, M.D.
I was born and raised in Pakistan. Growing up, I had a strong desire to pursue a career
in medicine, driven by a deep seated passion for helping others. This led me on an
incredible journey to the Philippines, where I embarked on my medical education. I
had a deep fascination with the human mind and a desire to understand the complexities
of human behavior. This passion led me to pursue a career in medicine with a specific
focus on psychiatry.
I had an exceptional opportunity to be a part of psychiatry training in Washington
state. Working closely with mentors, I witnessed the transformative impact they had
on their patients' lives. I was captivated by the ability of psychiatrists to help
individuals struggling with mental health conditions find hope, healing and a path
towards recovery.
There were several compelling reasons behind my decision to choose Texas Tech University
Health Sciences, Permian Basin for my residency training. Firstly, Texas Tech has
a renowned psychiatry department with faculty members who are experts in their field.
Psychiatry program here has a comprehensive curriculum and diverse clinical experiences
that promise to provide me with a strong foundation in psychiatry. Furthermore, its
commitment to research and innovation aligned perfectly with my own aspirations to
contribute to the advancement of psychiatric knowledge and treatment modalities. My
future goals are to pursue a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry and possibly
addiction psychiatry.
I enjoy watching movies, reading books, playing supports and spending time with family and friends.
Praveen Vodala, M.D.
As the youngest of four brothers, my fascination with human biology and genetics led me to pursue medical school and a psychiatry residency in India. To further expand my expertise, I moved to the United States, drawn by its advanced research, innovative treatments, and collaborative opportunities, especially in the complex field of addiction psychiatry.
After two years of my residency, my priorities have evolved to center around patient
empathy, shared decision-making, and overall patient satisfaction. I have come to
believe that while prescribing medication is a vital component of care, it is not
the ultimate goal. What truly matters to me is building a strong therapeutic alliance
with my patients—one rooted in empathy, open communication, and mutual trust.
I place great importance on listening attentively and ensuring that every patient
leaves not only with a treatment plan, but with a clear understanding of their condition,
a sense of reassurance, and confidence in the care they are receiving.
For me, the most rewarding aspect of clinical practice is seeing the positive impact
of the treatment plan on my patients' lives. Witnessing their progress, hearing their
feedback, and knowing that they feel heard and supported affirms my purpose, bringing
me deep professional and personal fulfillment.
Outside of psychiatry, I enjoy cooking, singing, and traveling. Cooking is a therapeutic and creative outlet, singing helps me express and connect emotionally, and traveling broadens my perspective by immersing me in diverse cultures and experiences.
Sendhil Raj Karmegam, M.D.
I graduated medical school from PSGIMS&R, Coimbatore, India. I started practicing
in a rural health center, where I understood that the importance of mental health
is often ignored and stigmatized. The process of rendering mental health services
kindled a curiosity about the human mind and body. I completed Psychiatry residency
at the same medical university in India, with an aim to create awareness and deliver
accessible mental health services to people in need. A global training at TTUHSC is
an opportunity for me to understand the bio-psycho-social factors in the community
and I look forward to pursue my interest in Mood disorders research. I enjoy playing
chess and cricket with friends. My curiosity in astrophysics keeps me in awe with
new discoveries emerging every day and ponder about life.

internal medicine and a strong commitment to serving underserved and rural populations.

in the unique mental health needs of youth in marginalized communities. Dr. Stone
brings a holistic, trauma-informed approach to her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Fellowship at Texas Tech, with a focus on improving access to psychiatric care for
children and adolescents in underserved regions.
Thu Tran, M.D.
I grew in Kansas City where I completed my medical school training at University of Missouri-Kansas City's BA/MD program. Afterwards, I moved to south Texas to complete an Internal Medicine residency at Texas Institute of Graduate Medical Education & Research (TIGMER) in Laredo Texas. Upon graduating from IM training in a medically underserved border town, I saw the great need for mental health education and care even in patients who initially presented for physical concerns. I had always been fascinated by the inner workings of the mind and how mental illness can distort a patient's personality and actions, and seeing the impact of untreated psychiatric conditions on physical health in this underserved patient population solidified my decision to further pursue a career in psychiatry. Outside of work, I describe myself as artsy and enjoy activities such a scrapbooking, interior design, and baking desserts.
Travis Pham, M.D.
I was born and raised in Houston, TX and spent time in Austin, TX completing my undergraduate degree before moving out to West Texas for my medical education. I have an interest in working with underserved populations and aiding individuals to become the best version of themselves. I truly believe that in order to effectively treat a patient, you must not only be well versed in knowledge about the illness, but also the person who has the illness as well. In my spare time, I enjoy social gatherings, being active outdoors, live music, photography, and painting. I am excited to continue on my journey in the field of psychiatry to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me.
